Platform Work Directive reaches the Official Journal
Directive published
Directive (EU) 2024/2831 was published in the Official Journal. It addresses determination of employment status and algorithmic management in platform work, including human oversight and protections around automated decisions. As a directive, it requires national implementation; publication does not instantly create one identical employment arrangement across every member state.
The Malaysian lens
Malaysian gig workers and platforms should treat this as an international comparison, not a statement of Malaysian employment status. Our interpretation is that the work relationship and the decision process deserve separate examination. A contract label may not answer questions about control, explanations or a worker’s ability to challenge account suspension.
QUESTION TO ASK
Can a worker obtain an understandable explanation and human review of a consequential automated decision?
Watch / next step
For EU operations, follow the relevant national implementation. For Malaysian arrangements, examine local law and actual working practices rather than importing an overseas classification from a headline.
